Overview
Make-up Artistry is a hugely exciting and diverse industry to work in. Professional make-up artists, create and produce the latest make-up trends and hair styles within fashion, TV, film and theatre production. If you’ve got passion, drive, creativity, a commitment to work hard, a high level of motivation and are a good team player who enjoys working with others, then Make-up Artistry is for you.
Entry Requirements
For entry to this course you’ll need:
- a minimum of one Higher (ideally Art or English) or a relevant course as SCQF Level 6 or equivalent
- hairdressing experience would be beneficial and occupationally relevant skills and experience
- to submit an application, completing all sections, including Personal Statement in full
- To show various samples of your artwork or photographic evidence of make-up. Please send this evidence for the Kilwinning Campus application direct to clare.mcleish@ayrshire.ac.uk, when you are submitting your course application.
If you don’t have formal qualifications but have life experience and relevant skills as outlined above, then we’ll also consider you for a place.
We may notify you of the outcome by letter and/or invite you to attend an interview.
Course Content
It's fun, fascinating and completely industry led.
You'll work with professional make-up companies, photographers, theatres and creative media organisations.
You'll build a high-quality e-portfolio of your creations as you go. Due to Make-up Artistry being such a fast-changing industry our aim is always to ensure that your course develops the current skills and knowledge required for positive progression, therefore some of what you study on the course may change.
Here's just some of what you may study:
- you'll learn to produce a portfolio of evidence covering hairstyling and make-up.
- create hairstyles, make-up and postiche for the 20th century, including sourcing relevant costumes to produce the full look.
- you'll learn to research, plan and devise ageing make-up skills for TV and theatre. Using a variety of techniques and products that’s relevant and required for industry.
- you'll learn to research, plan and devise special effects make-up for industry. Including cuts, bruising, lacerations effects for a simulated activity. To help create these results you will also learn to sculpt create moulds and run and fit prosthetic pieces.
- you'll learn to produce a portfolio of research evidence covering the roles and responsibilities of a production team, mark a script and produce two plans, two make-up and hairstyles for a practical performance incorporating any changes that’s required throughout the production.
You'll also have the chance to:
- go on work experiences, such as local theatre productions, fashion shows, film set and photo shoots
- volunteer in the community, providing services like prom make-up or face painting
- take part in competitions such as World Skills and Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT)
- learn from demonstrations by industry suppliers and guest make-up artists

Skills
You will develop the technical skills and the qualities essential for working in the make-up artistry industry.
- Ability to prepare and provide make-up artistry techniques safely and effectively
- Provide hair, wigs and make-up services required for the make-up artistry industry
- Gain effective communication skills to enable to work alongside various industry experts and provide make-up artistry services.
You’ll build transferable skills in meaningful contexts to help you become more effective in life, learning, and work, including digital skills for every day life.
