Overview

Good business and IT skills are needed in every type of industry and for all sizes of business - from small local firms to large multinationals, or public sector organisations such as the NHS and local councils. Our business courses give you the right skills and knowledge to prepare you for a wide range of exciting careers - they're relevant, practical and bang up to date with what businesses are looking for from new employees. If you've got aspirations for a career in business or accounting, then this course is a great place to start.

Entry Requirements

For entry to this course you’ll need:

  • A real interest in working in business or accounting
  • Four National 5s, ideally including English or Maths OR a relevant NQ qualification at Level 5
  • An interview with us

Course Content

This course will give you a good grounding in a wide variety of skills and knowledge relating to modern-day business to prepare you for further study or starting your career. Topics you’ll cover include marketing, economics, HR, IT, and accounting. You’ll begin by looking at large business organisations, including those operating globally. You’ll explore different business sectors, business objectives, and what impacts business success. You’ll look at what’s involved in the successful management of marketing and operations, including market research, the marketing mix, quality control, and production methods. You’ll learn how to manage people and finance effectively and develop your IT skills and knowledge. On the accounting side, you’ll look at basic bookkeeping and learn to use commercial software for accounting purposes, such as creating records for income and expenses or producing management reports.

Careers and Further Study

After this, you may have the opportunity to step up to a Level 7 course or dive straight into roles in finance, admin, or customer service.

Skills

As well as developing key skills, such as word processing and basic finance operating, you’ll develop a range of transferable such as written and oral communication skills, and organisation, planning, and time management. Throughout the course there will be opportunities to develop your problem solving and analytical skills. We’ll also help you develop your skills for employment, such as working as part of a team and creating a CV to get you noticed.

There are also opportunities to access Bridge to Business/Young Enterprise Scotland.
