You’ll learn how to gather, prepare, and present financial information using real accounting techniques—just like the pros. You’ll discover why these numbers matter for planning, decision-making, and keeping businesses on track. Plus, you’ll build skills to interpret and analyse data, understand accounting rules, and even explore the ethical side of being an accountant (because doing the right thing counts!). By the end, you’ll have the know-how to make sense of money and how it drives success.Entry Requirements
You are not required to have any prior experience and knowledge of accounting before starting this qualification. However, you would benefit from having gained either National 5 Accounting or any of the SCQF level 5 Accounting units, as well as numeracy and some ICT skills training or experience.
You should have at least 2 passes in National 5 units at “C” grade or above.

How will I be assessed
Assessment is continuous throughout the course and consists mostly of open book tasks with some closed book tasks also required.
Course Content
On the NPA Accounting course, you’ll learn how money really moves—how businesses keep track, make decisions, and stay on top. You’ll get hands-on with real-life skills like balancing accounts, understanding cash flow, and spotting what makes a business tick. If you’re curious about how numbers shape the world, this is where you start!
Expect hands-on activities, real-world examples, and plenty of chances to show off your problem-solving skills. By the end, you’ll not only understand the numbers—you’ll know how to make them work for you.
To gain the award you will need to complete the following five units:
- Preparing Management Accounting Information
- Analysing Accounting Information
- Preparing Financial Accounting Information
- Professional Ethics for Accountants
- Recording Data in the Ledger
Careers and Further Study
The level 6 award could provide progression to:
- HNC in Accounting or related areas, subject to achieving at least one Higher at “C” grade or above.
- Employment in the accounting sector.
