Overview

Painting and decorating is one of several trades which supports the massive industry known as construction - the building of houses, commercial premises (like shops, hotels or offices) and industrial premises (like factories or warehouses). Other trades within construction include bricklaying, and carpentry and joinery. Skilled tradespeople usually find themselves in high demand - from homeowners as well as industry - so if you invest in your abilities now, you could have a great future ahead!

If you'd like to learn a trade, then this course is a great place to start. All our trades staff are highly skilled and experienced, and fully committed to sharing their expertise and knowledge with you. Ayrshire College is also recognised as a Centre of Excellence by the Construction Industry Training Board, so there really is no better place to come and learn a trade!

Entry Requirements

No formal qualifications or prior experience required. All you need is a genuine interest and an interview and aptitude test.

Course Content

On this course , you may learn about:

  • Tool mastery: learn to use scrapers, rollers, and more
  • Painting skills: from priming to decorative effects like rag rolling and stencilling
  • Wallpapering: applying lining and decorative wallpaper. Get the hang of it, literally.
  • Introduction to working at heights: learn to set up steps and ladders
  • Teamwork: essential for any job site
  • Health and safety: avoid putting yourself or anyone else at risk
  • Industry exploration: understand the diverse roles and trades within the construction industry, broadening your knowledge.
  • Craft project: get the chance to demonstrate your newly acquired skills.
  • Essential skills: develop transferable skills, including communication, numeracy, ICT, teamwork and problem solving.

On completion of this course you may:

  • Progress to the Pre-apprenticeship in Painting and Decorating [SCQF Level 4] Part 2 course, this course commences in January 2027.
  • Pursue a Painting and Decorating apprenticeship, kickstarting a career in the construction industry.
  • Discover pathways to academic growth and job prospects, all while gaining practical skills that employers are looking for.
