Ayrshire College is first Scottish college to gain GWO Basic Technical Training accreditation

Anyone looking to enter the wind and renewable energy industry will soon be able to complete the Basic Technical Training (BTT) in just one week at Ayrshire College’s Ayr Campus.

Ayrshire College became the first Scottish college to gain Global Wind Organisation (GWO) accreditation for BTT earlier this year, alongside Dumfries & Galloway College. The BTT qualification is fast becoming a requirement for most companies employing people in the renewable energy sector.

Ayrshire College plans to roll out the training to the general public after successfully putting six of its current City and Guilds Wind Turbine Technician students through the training this year.

The training will take one week to complete and covers basic electrical, hydraulics and mechanical engineering. Students will receive a GWO certificate at the end of the training.

The GWO-accredited training will be made available throughout the year and will be on offer to anyone looking to enter the wind and renewable energy industry, and to anyone who is currently working within the sector but has not yet completed the training.

Ayrshire College also delivers a full-time City and Guilds Wind Turbine Technician course at its Ayr Campus, which offers a greater level of qualification. There is also an opportunity, if selected, to undertake GWO accredited Working at Height, First Aid, Fire Awareness and Manual Handling training.

Jim Armstrong, Curriculum Manager at Ayrshire College, said “I’m absolutely delighted that we are the first college in Scotland to be able to offer the Global Wind Organisation Basic Technical Training Standard.

“For the College, gaining this GWO accreditation gives us the ability to equip even more people interested in pursuing a career within the wind and renewable energy industry with the necessary skills and knowledge required to help secure employment.

“We have very strong links with Community Windpower Ltd – who build a significant number of the wind farms around Ayrshire – and we’re in constant dialogue with the major players within the industry ie Seimens, Gamesa, Vestas and Nordex. So we’re ideally positioned to bring people through this qualification, and we look forward to helping them get their career started in this growing industry.”
