College student in the running for Junior Stylist of the Year

An Ayrshire College hairdressing student has been shortlisted for the Junior Stylist of the Year award at the Scottish Hair & Beauty Awards 2019.

28-year-old Jillian Gilmour from Kilmarnock, who works in Onthank’s Salon G Hair & Beauty with her mum and two sisters, was stunned to find out she’d been nominated for the award.

Jillian said: “This is the first time I’ve been up for an award, it’s a big shock. I’m really looking forward to the event, it’ll be a glamourous night and just to be nominated is a huge achievement.

“I like to think my work is always completed to a high standard. When I finish working on someone I always ask myself ‘would I be happy with this?’, plus my older sister is the head stylist so she’d be quick in telling me to fix it!”

The family salon has also been nominated at the awards, in the ‘Most Loved Salon of the Year’ category for the South West region.

Jillian said: “My family is absolutely delighted that I’m nominated, and the fact that the salon as a whole is a finalist too is such a big thing for us.

“I was working as a junior stylist before I came to Ayrshire College last January. It was my sister who pushed me to get the qualifications as she’s fully booked all of the time so doesn’t have the time to train me, and she could see that this is what I wanted to do. I’ve grown up with hair and beauty all around me, I love it.

“This is my last year at the college before I’m fully qualified and I’ve really enjoyed learning new things. It’s not been easy to balance college with work and having four kids, so to win this award would be a great achievement for me.”

The award ceremony takes place on Sunday 8 December at The DoubleTree by Hilton in Glasgow.
