Ayrshire College graduates win British Education Award

Twin brothers who graduated from a Sport & Fitness course last year at Ayrshire College have won the Vocational award for Scotland at the 2020 British Education Awards.

The British Education Awards identify and celebrate individuals who have excelled within the British education system.

Lewis and Ryan McGregor picked up the award at a ceremony held in Manchester’s Hilton Deansgate on Thursday 30 January.

The McGregor twins volunteered throughout their time at Ayrshire College, coaching football to hundreds of children in Ayrshire. Their exceptional dedication and coaching abilities have not got unnoticed in recent years, with this British Education Award being the latest in a long line of accolades achieved by the pair.

They both recently achieved the Saltire Award for over 1,000 hours’ worth of volunteering.

At the Scottish Football Association Grassroots Awards, Lewis and Ryan were awarded the Best Young Volunteers award. They were also finalists at the recent SQA Star Awards, in the College Candidate of the Year award category.

In September 2019, they were also awarded with the Queens Award for Voluntary Service at a ceremony in their hometown of Cumnock.

Lewis McGregor, 19 from Cumnock, said: “It was fantastic to even be shortlisted for the award, never mind win it! I can’t thank Ayrshire College, Kilmarnock Football Club, Cumnock Juniors Community Enterprise and Scott Guy enough for the opportunities that I have received, which have helped along my journey to achieving this award.”

Ryan McGregor said: “It’s an absolute honour to be awarded the Scotland Vocational winner at the British Education Awards. It has been a phenomenal journey and we can’t thank everyone enough that has helped us along the way.”

David Dougan, Sport & Fitness lecturer at Ayrshire College, said: “This is a tremendous achievement, but one that is truly deserved. This is testament to their enthusiasm and commitment to make a difference, not only their local community of Cumnock, but to every group they come into contact with.

“These boys are great example of young people who have the reaped the reward of their efforts through their drive to succeed and help others. They are great role models and magnificent ambassadors, not only for Ayrshire College, but the wider community.”
