Ayrshire College students and staff step forward for vaccine

NHS Ayrshire & Arran vaccination teams are on site at Ayrshire College campuses to kick off the new term by providing vaccines for both students and staff.

The first drop-in vaccine clinics took place at the Ayr and Kilmarnock campuses for Ayrshire College on Tuesday 31 August and Thursday 2 September and there are further opportunities at Kilwinning and Kilmarnock this week and next:

  • Ayrshire College Kilwinning Campus – Friday 3 September and Wednesday 8 September
  • Ayrshire College Kilmarnock Campus – Monday 6 September
  • Ayrshire College Ayr Campus – Friday 10 September

Everyone over 16 is eligible for COVID-19 vaccine and it is by having both doses that you achieve the best protection against the virus.

Painting and Decorating student Craig Morgan used the drop-in at Ayr campus to pick up his second dose earlier this week. He said:

“It’s important to get vaccinated and keep yourself and your loved ones safe.”

NHS Ayrshire & Arran Public Health Director Lynne McNiven said:

“We want vaccination opportunities to be as convenient as possible for people and we are delighted at the support from Ayrshire College for the local vaccine programme. It is great to see students and staff coming forward at these drop-in clinics hosted by Ayrshire College in Ayr, Kilwinning and Kilmarnock – my thanks go to everyone involved and each and every person that has accepted the invitation to receive their COVID-19 vaccine.

“Coronavirus can be severe at any age – we are seeing younger people impacted and in some cases being admitted to hospital for treatment. Our best protection against the negative effects of the virus is by getting both doses of vaccine to get the maximum protection.

“Restrictions have eased and we are all enjoying more freedoms than previously and this has been possible thanks to the success of the vaccine programme. Let’s keep this going and continue to roll up our sleeves when we get the chance.”

Ayrshire College Principal Carol Turnbull said:

“Welcoming vaccine clinics will be on each of our campuses in the coming weeks. This is a fantastic opportunity for our staff and students to receive their coronavirus vaccinations. Given the ease of convenience, we hope that many staff and students take up this opportunity given as it is the best protection against coronavirus.”

All the vaccines licenced for use in the UK have been through the normal rigorous steps to ensure their safety and efficacy before being rolled out to the public. When you come for vaccination you will receive information about common side effects as well as the chance to discuss any concerns you might have with a member of the vaccination team on the day.

Students who wish to be vaccinated can also drop-in to any local mass vaccination clinic. Details of upcoming venues available can be found here: https://www.nhsaaa.net/coronavirus-covid-19/covid-19-vaccination-appointments/
