Ayrshire College aims to achieve LGBT Youth Scotland Charter Mark

Ayrshire College is undertaking the LGBT Youth Scotland Charter Mark to strengthen and enhance LGBT+ awareness and inclusion across the College. It aims to achieve the Foundations Charter Mark for large organisations by June 2023 and is a further example of its commitment to being a safe and inclusive place where all are treated fairly and with respect.

The LGBT Charter Mark programme, supported by the Scottish Government, will see the College complete a series of actions to achieve the accreditation.

The Student President of Ayrshire College, Ellie Jamieson, who encouraged the College to undertake the Charter Mark following feedback from students, said: “The LGBT Youth Scotland Foundations Charter Mark is incredibly important to our students as it enables them to feel welcome, to feel safe, and to express their gender identity, sexuality and self-expression without fear or judgement from others.”

Anne Campbell, Vice-Principal, said: “Promoting equality and diversity is at the heart of everything we do at Ayrshire College and we are working towards the LGBT Foundations Charter Mark because we want to demonstrate that we, as individuals and as an organisation, are committed to ensuring that LGBT students and staff feel safe, supported and included.”

Anne is one of 81 members of staff, plus the Student President and Student Vice-President, who have completed the LGBT Youth Scotland online learning course. Twenty-five members of staff and the Student Association will participate in a live workshop with LGBT Youth Scotland in November.

Sara Turkington, Equality and Diversity Lead, said: “The College has a long and successful record of supporting, advocating and championing LGBT+ rights and inclusion. The College’s participation in the Charter Mark has, however, re-focussed attention on what LGBT+ students and staff need and want from the College. I look forward to working with students and staff across the College and LGBT Youth Scotland to achieve the Charter Mark.”
