Ayrshire College Marks Challenge Poverty Week with Students and Partners

As part of Challenge Poverty Week 2024, Ayrshire College brought together students, the Student Association, and key external partners like Thriving Communities and RAMH (Recovery Across Mental Health) to discuss how the College is supporting students facing financial and personal challenges. The day provided an opportunity for honest conversations about the barriers students encounter and the ways in which the College’s services are making a difference.  

 

Students spoke candidly about the positive impact of the College’s support systems, including financial aid, mental health resources, and community engagement programmes.  

 

Angela Cox, Principal and Chief Executive Officer of Ayrshire College, reflected on the importance of this engagement: "Challenge Poverty Week provides an important opportunity for us to reflect on how we support students, especially those from deprived backgrounds. By collaborating with partners like Thriving Communities and RAMH, and working closely with our students, we ensure that everyone at Ayrshire College has the opportunity to thrive and succeed, no matter their circumstances." 

 

Some of the focus of the day was the Recovery College programme, a partnership with RAMH that offers students critical mental health support, helping them manage challenges that may otherwise impact their education. Ayrshire College’s collaboration with Thriving Communities also supports initiatives like the Ayrshire College Community Sports Hub, which uses sport and physical activity to boost student wellbeing and foster a sense of community.  

 

Shirley Laing, Director for Lifelong Learning and Skills, visited during Challenge Poverty Week to observe these discussions and see firsthand the College’s ongoing commitment to student support.  

 

Through close partnerships and by listening to the needs of its students, Ayrshire College remains dedicated to reducing inequalities and ensuring that every student has the support they need to thrive.
