Ayrshire College’s Hospitality Department proudly hosted the Rotary Young Chef of the Year District Finals yesterday, welcoming talented young cooks from across the region for a high-energy and inspiring day of competition.
The competition is for young people aged 11 to 17. The district finals welcomed individuals who have successfully progressed from the first stage of the competition, the Local Heats. Competitors were challenged to prepare and serve a two-course, healthy and nutritious meal, a main course and dessert, for two people, all within a two-hour time limit and a budget of £18.
The college’s Skills Kitchen buzzed with focus and creativity as competitors showcased an impressive range of culinary skills. Dishes were judged against a comprehensive set of criteria, including planning and costing, knife skills and correct use of equipment, hygiene and organisation, presentation, nutritional balance, and most importantly, taste. A total of 60 points were available, with every element of the cooking process assessed to professional standards.
The competition was judged by Ayrshire College Professional Cookery Lecturers, Ainslay Miller and Stephen Elby, who were impressed by the high standard of work produced by such young competitors.
Angela Sheirdan, Head of Learning & Skills, Creative, Hair, Beauty, Complementary Therapies & Make Up Artist at Ayrshire College, praised both the competitors and the partnership with Rotary, saying:
It was a pleasure to host the Rotary Young Chef of the Year District Finals here at Ayrshire College.
