Research shows that one in ten children in every class has a caring responsibility, but 49% of these young and young adult carers do not get help in school, college or university to balance caring with their education.
Ayrshire College is proud to work in partnership with the Health & Social Care Partnership Carers Team, Carers Gateway North Ayrshire and the East Ayrshire Carers Centre to support our student carers across all campuses.
Kerryanne Owens, Carers Development Officer at The Health and Social Care Partnership Carers Team speaks on the campaign:
The Health & Social Care Partnership Carers Team, Carers Gateway North Ayrshire, and Ayrshire College are united in creating flexible, inclusive, and supportive educational opportunities for unpaid carers. This Carers Rights Day, under the theme ‘Know your rights, use your rights,’ we’re committed to raising awareness, empowering carers, and ensuring they have the tools to thrive because carers deserve to achieve their goals and feel valued for the vital role they play in our communities.
David Pirrie, Employability Development Manager speaks on the partnership working:
East Ayrshire Carers Centre and Ayrshire College have been working in close partnership to identify and support student carers throughout their time at both Kilmarnock and Ayr campus. Together, we provide tailored advice, practical assistance, and emotional support to help students balance learning with their caring responsibilities. This collaboration ensures access to dedicated resources, tailored support, and advise from our Adult and Young Carer teams. By working jointly, we aim to remove barriers to education and create an inclusive environment where student carers can excel and meet their aspirations and potential.
Ayrshire College encourages student carers to reach out to the Student Experience team at the InfoHub or speak with their Engagement and Wellbeing Advisor for advice and support. You can also email info@ayrshire.ac.uk.
