Student of the Year Award

Returning to education and achieving her goals

After a long break from formal education, Ashleigh returned to study at Ayrshire College to gain an HNC/HND in Applied Sciences. Having previously enjoyed evening classes at college, she knew she would be supported in an inclusive learning environment where she could develop her knowledge and skills.

Overcoming challenges

Returning to education wasn't without its challenges. Ashleigh had to overcome the fear of getting back into studying and adapt to new technology and digital platforms such as Moodle and Teams.

With determination and support from her lecturers and Student Services, she persevered. Her proudest achievement was completing her course and achieving an A in her Graded Unit – particularly meaningful given the uncertainty she had felt about whether she would make it to the end.

Learning through practical experience

Ashleigh particularly enjoyed being able to take the theory she learned in the classroom and apply it during practical laboratory sessions. Along the way, she developed valuable transferable skills including communication, presentation, teamwork and problem-solving, giving her a strong foundation for her future studies.

She is especially grateful to the lecturers and staff who supported her throughout her journey, describing them as passionate about their subjects and determined to see their students succeed.

Making a difference beyond college

Ashleigh's achievements extend beyond her studies. She has volunteered as an event first-aider with St Andrew's First Aid, contributing more than 1,000 hours at concerts, festivals and major football games.

In April 2026, she was invited to meet Princess Anne at a royal ceremony, where she was recognised for her achievements and contribution through her volunteering.

What’s next?

Ashleigh plans to continue her education, either at Glasgow Caledonian University or through the Open University, with the ambition of progressing towards a career or postgraduate study in the future.

Ashleigh’s advice

Reach for their potential and take on the opportunity to study at Ayrshire College. Anything is possible if you're willing to work towards it.

For Ashleigh, the experience has been supportive, inclusive and rewarding – and a reminder that determination and hard work can help you achieve more than you might initially think possible.
