Returning to education as a mature student and a mum, Lisa wasn't sure whether she could achieve her dream of becoming a nurse. Her time at Ayrshire College changed that.

Throughout her HNC Healthcare Practice, she developed her confidence, academic skills and understanding of compassionate, person-centred care. She particularly valued her placement, where she was able to put her learning into practice and gain experience in the healthcare environment.

One of her proudest achievements was receiving an A in her Graded Unit – a result that represented the determination and perseverance she had shown throughout the year.

Sometimes you just need someone to believe in you until you learn to believe in yourself.

Returning to education was a major challenge. After being away from formal education for many years, Lisa initially questioned whether she would be able to keep up academically.

With encouragement from her lecturers and support staff, she learned to ask for help, overcome her doubts and recognise her own abilities. Her confidence grew with every assessment, eventually leading to her HNC and a place at university.

She also credits her sister Emily, who completed the course alongside her, and lecturer Kristen for the support and encouragement they gave her throughout the year.

Lisa is continuing her journey by studying Mental Health Nursing at the University of the West of Scotland.

Her ambition is to become a qualified Mental Health Nurse working within the NHS, helping people feel listened to, respected and cared for.
