Transport and Logistics

A modern apprenticeship in transport and logistics is typically a paid job combined with structured training, leading to a nationally recognised qualification. In the UK (including Scotland), the exact framework varies, but the general pattern is similar.

What you'd do

Depending on the employer and pathway, an apprentice might work in areas such as:

  • Warehouse operations
  • Supply chain coordination
  • Freight forwarding
  • Road transport planning
  • Distribution and delivery management
  • Stock control and inventory management
  • Customer service and transport administration
  • Fleet operations and vehicle scheduling
  • What apprentices do

Training arrangements vary depending on the employer and apprenticeship programme and may include day release to college (for example, one day per week or block-release attendance). The level of training, mentoring and workplace support will differ between employers, but all apprentices benefit from hands-on experience, guidance from experienced professionals, and opportunities to develop their technical and professional skills.

  • Who it's for

Apprenticeships are open to people of all ages and backgrounds, whether they are starting their career, looking to upskill, or changing direction professionally. Apprentices develop their skills and knowledge through a combination of workplace experience and formal training, meaning prior experience levels can vary. When recruiting an apprentice, employers can choose candidates whose qualities, potential and career aspirations best match the needs of their business, while supporting them to learn and grow on the job.
