A group of Ayrshire College apprentices recently delivered a workshop to senior school pupils as part of the King’s Foundation’s Aerospace Skills Week at Dumfries House in Cumnock.

The apprentices, who are employed by Spirit, Collins and Prestwick Aircraft Maintenance Ltd (PAML), delivered a practical lesson on Advanced Composite Materials (ACM) to students who had expressed an interest in working in the aerospace sector. They explained how these fibre composites are manufactured, gave the students an opportunity to set up for a vacuum curing process and shared their own journeys into a career in aerospace.

The Prestwick-branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society also delivered an aerodynamics lecture using the wind tunnel that it recently loaned to Ayrshire College.

Alastair Heron, Head of Learning & Skills for Aerospace at Ayrshire College, said: This was a great opportunity for our local apprentices to share their journey and experiences of getting into the aerospace industry with the next generation of potential engineers. It was great for their own development too. Facilitating this workshop for the King’s Foundation showcases the expertise of our apprentices while exemplifying our commitment to inspiring the next generation of aerospace professionals.”
