For entry to this course you’ll need:
- A real interest in theatre and arts production
- Two A-C passes at National 5 in Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths subjects,
OR
- a Level 5 qualification in a relevant area such as Sound Production, Acting & Performance, Music or Art & Design
OR
- Relevant industry/volunteering experience
- An interview with us

What's Involved
Ayrshire College in conjunction with CentreStage Art Academy in Kilmarnock, have formed an exclusive partnership for 2023 to offer Production Arts and Technical Theatre skills at NC Level 6 at their brand new campus.
Utilising Centrestage’s world class facilities, work experience / employment opportunities, as well as the years of experience of highly-skilled Ayrshire College staff we aim to deliver industry-ready professionals into the world of production across the UK and beyond. Students will be amongst the best trained production professionals in the country.
This course is almost entirely practical with few if any reports or essays, but you will be required to plan, develop and evaluate your skills throughout the course and work as part of a team and individually.
You’ll participate in event production operations including theatre, music venues and broadcast media. You’ll work on industry standard equipment and be taught by very experienced, current industry professionals.
Here’s more of what you’ll be doing:
- You’ll expand on your skills in scenic art and construction.
- You’ll expand on your skills in lighting design for performance.
- You’ll expand on your skills in stage sound and technology.
- You’ll develop research techniques, looking at a range of production spaces and and learning to evaluate the design style.
- You’ll learn about digital audio workstations, and how to record and manipulate audio and MIDI signals for sound production.
- You’ll develop your skills in stage management to include organisational, leadership and team working skills.
- You’ll focus on professional development for production arts, and the knowledge and skills you’ll need for working in the industry

When you successfully complete this course, you’ll have the choice of:
- Progressing to further study such as HNC Technical Theatre or Sound Production or TV and Broadcasting or Media
- Starting your career in Production Arts, there are many unfilled vacancies nationally and internationally in a variety of roles and most students find work while at College or soon after.
Possible careers include: Lighting Operator, Sound Operator, Set Designer, Stage Manager, Assistant Stage Manager, Event Organiser, Production Specialist, Broadcast Engineer (lighting, sound, production), Lighting Director, Sound Designer, Stage Crew, Runner, Front of House Crew, Make-up Artist.
